In Advanced/Remedial Massage, I look more closely at a clients' overall body posture.
It is a more clinical (remedial) form of massage and would most benefit people who are medium-long term sufferers of chronic back pain, Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Sciatica. Even people living with conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone Disease, Dystonia or Fibromyalgia can gain achieve levels of pain relief and a lessening of discomfort through having regular massage treatments, making their lives and conditions more bearable.
But indeed anyone who has an ongoing issue with any kind of joint and muscle mobility and are in constant or regular levels of pain and discomfort would be best-suited for this kind of massage therapy, even if it only happens after playing golf or after gardening.
When I massage
I get deep into the muscle groups to encourage them to relax. Because of this, blood circulation is increased which in turn allows vital nutrients to flow again back into the affected areas, helping to aid the repair of the afftected area. It also stimulates the production of Endorphin's,
the body's own naturally produced pain killers, which help to control the pain and lower levels of any anxiety
or depression.
It is a fairly rigorous treatment, so expect to be a little sore the following day but levels of pressure can be discussed at any time before or during your treatment.
Indicators that I would look for where a remedial massage might help:
Any abnormal curve to the spine;
Levels of the ears;
Whether the client has flat feet;
Level of the shoulders, hips and scapulae (shoulder blades);
Poor walking / sitting posture.
With problems with the back, I would assess if there is any sign of lordosis or kyphosis to the spine and be able to give simple exercises to help with this. I also look for poor functioning joints in the spine and treat accordingly. I can also check to see if pain suffered is from a herniated disk
or just muscular and also how to also ease the pain and discomfort of whiplash.
